Dc in ninth ch from hook,
(Skip 2 chains, dc in next ch)14 times.

There are now 15 boxes of crochet forming the bottom row of the chart. Complete the motif working from the chart. The first row is worked left to right, the next row is worked right to left and so on. Ch 5 and TURN at the end of each row. Each open box on the chart = ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in next st. Each shaded box on the chart = dc in nexr 3 sts. When you complete all rows fasten off and weave in ends with the yarn needle.

Edging Join white in any space. Make 3 sc in each space around, with 5 sc in each corner. Join with a slip st in first sc.
Fasten off.

Felted Purses....Last Minute Gifts

At the last minute I decided I needed something special in which to "wrap" my nieces' Christmas Gift Cards. I found a free pattern for these little felted purses here at the Lion Brand Yarn website. (You'll need to register for free).

Then I embellished the purses with felted flowers made from 2 patterns. The pink flower pattern is free and can be found here. The red rose is from a set of patterns I purchased from an Etsy Shop here.

The pattern gave directions for felting by washing machine but I did it by hand in a small bowl. This was my first attempt at felting and I loved it! Try it if you need a quick gift or get started now for Valentine's Day.

Ideas for Holiday Decorating

Getting ready for Thanksgiving I decided to decorate Autumn, the crocheted Greyhound. She's wearing a bright yellow silk Mum with Fall leaves and checkered ribbon. Autumn will spend Thanksgiving in her new home with her new friend, Hickory (the real Greyhound).

Greyhound Hobby Horse Crochet Pattern

Finished Size: Head ears to nose=12”
About 39” tall including stick.

1 ounce 4 Ply yarn Black (nose)
7 ounces 4 Ply yarn in Main Color
5 ounces 4 Ply yarn in Black or tan (for parti color hounds only)
2 ounces 1 ply black yarn OR small ball of Size 10 crochet cotton black (for brindles only)
2 ounces 4 Ply yarn Country Blue or your choice for halter and reins
Crochet Hook Size K
Crochet Hook Size G
Two 1” metal rings silver or gold
18 or 20mm Brown Crystal Eyes -1 pair
Polyester Fiberfill Stuffing
Yarn needle
1-1/2” wide ribbon – 1 yard Red/white plaid or your choice
Wooden dowel – ¾” diameter by 36” long
White acrylic paint 2 oz. Bottle and medium paint brush
or white spray paint
Acrylic sealer spray
Tacky glue

To make a brindle hound you will need
1 ply black yarn. This usually comes on a cone for machine knitting. Or you can substitute black crochet cotton (Size 10 bedspead). Your main color yarn should be fawn color or light reddish brown.
When directions call for main color combine your 1 ply black with 2 strands of the 4 ply yarn. Work with both colors held together for a row or 2. Then drop the black strand for 3 or 4 rows or rounds to create stripes. There’s no need to cut/re-attach the black strand. Just carry it along on the inside of the head.
Parti-color: Use white for the main color. The directions will tell you when to change to black or tan or make your own variations.

Thread the 12” tail end from the beginning of Row 1 in the yarn needle. Pull the tail out of the ear 1” so that the ear curls up slightly. Sew to secure in this position. Finish off.

DOWEL CAP
With 2 strands of main color and Hook size K:
Rnd 1: Ch 2,
6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc).

Rnd 2: (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc)
3 times. (9 sc).

Rnd 3-5: Sc in each sc around.
(9 sc).
Fasten off. Set aside for now.

HALTER & REINS

With Country blue yarn and Hook size G,
Top Strip:
Chain 19,
Make 3 sc around a 1” ring,
Turn,
Hdc in last ch made and in remaining 18 chs,
Make 3 sc around the 2nd 1” ring,
Turn, join with a slip stitch in 1st ch.
Fasten off.

Bottom Strip:
Chain 12,
Make 3 sc around either 1” ring on top strip,
Turn,
Hdc in last ch made and in remaining 11 chs,
Make 3 sc around the other 1” ring on the top strip,
Turn, join with a slip stitch in 1st ch.
Fasten off.

Reins:
Ch 125,
Make 3 sc around either 1” ring on halter,
Turn,
Hdc in last chain made and in remaining 124 chs,
Make 3 sc around the other 1” ring on the halter,
Turn, join with a slip stitch in 1st ch.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Be sure the dowel is smooth and free of splinters. Paint with several coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry.
Spray with acrylic sealer and allow to dry.
If your hobby hound stick pony will be used as a toy, drill a hole thru the dowel about 1” from one end. (If your hobby hound will be a room decoration the hole isn’t necessary).
Insert 9 inches of the dowel (the drilled end) into the hole at the bottom of the neck.
Add or subtract stuffing if necessary and adjust shape.
Slide the dowel out slowly, spread tacky glue on the top 8 inches and carefully re-insert.
If you drilled a hole: Thread a doubled length of main color yarn in the needle. Sew from one side of the top of the head, thru the hole in the dowel and out the other side of the head. Secure both ends.
Thread the 10” yarn end from Rnd 58 in the needle. Sew in and out of each sc from Rnd 58, pull to gather around stick and fasten off hiding the end inside the neck.
Apply tacky glue to the inside of the dowel cap. Slide the cap onto the other end of the dowel and let dry.
Place the halter and reins on the hound as in the photo. Tie the ribbon around the neck and make a pretty bow.

Stuff ice cream bar lightly with polyfill.
Fold up the bottom flap to close the opening.
Sew along 3 sides with dark brown making sewing stitches in BLO.
Apply tacky glue to one inch of one end of a craft stick. Insert in the stick slot on the bottom of the bar. Let dry.

With neon green and F hook

Ch 2.

Stuff lightly with polyfill

Rnd 19: (in BLO sc next 2 sc together) repeat around. (6 sc)

Fasten off leaving 12” for sewing

Apply tacky glue to one inch of one end of a craft stick.
Insert the stick through the opening at the bottom of the pop. Let dry.
When thoroughly dry gather last 6 sc together around the stick. Pull tightly to close the opening.
Secure and fasten off.

GRAPE ICE POP

With Bright lavendar and F hook

Ch 2.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3-18: sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Stuff lightly with polyfill

Rnd 19: (in BLO sc next 2 sc together) repeat around. (6 sc)

Fasten off leaving 15” for sewing

Repeat Rnds 1 to 19.

Place the pops side by side and sew together.

Secure and fasten off.

RAINBOW ICE POP

Begin with hot pink and F hook

Rnd 1: Ch 4,
3 sc in second ch from hook,
sc in next ch,
3 sc in next ch,
working on other side of starting ch
sc in next ch. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: sc in first sc of Rnd 1,
3 sc in next sc,
sc in each of next 3 sc,
3 sc in next sc,
sc in last 2 sc. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: sc in first 2 sc,
3 sc in next sc,
sc in next 5 sc,
3 sc in next sc,
sc in last 3 sc. (16 sc)

Rnd 4-11: sc in each sc around. (16 sc)

Change to white

Rnd 12-17: sc in each sc around. (16 sc)

Change to sky blue

Rnd 18-22: sc in each sc around. (16 sc)

Stuff lightly with polyfill.

Rnd 23: In BLO sc next 2 sc together. (8 sc)

Fasten off leaving 12” for sewing.
